Porsche Cayenne Diesel

2011 LUMMA Design Porsche Cayenne Diesel

LUMMA Design proves that style and functionality do not have to be mutually exclusive. With its comprehensive range of accessories for the Porsche Cayenne, the car customiser from Winterlingen in Germany not only enhances the appearance of the Zuffenhausen-made SUV but also equips it for everyday use.

2011 LUMMA Design Porsche Cayenne Diesel

The D-Box for the Cayenne Diesel brings both reason and driving pleasure to the table in equal measure. This plug-and-play solution increases the diesel engine’s performance from 240 to an impressive 276 hp (203 kW) and raises the vehicle’s maximum torque from 550 to 630 Newton metres. This increased torque allows noticeable savings in fuel consumption to be made because it is precisely at low engine speeds that greater efficiency can be achieved. If required, the D-Box can be completely retrofitted.

In order to also enhance the engine bay’s aesthetic qualities, LUMMA Design offers an optics engine package consisting of red-coated covers and a crest logo made of metal, with the top-quality materials emphasising the increased power of the diesel engine. In addition, thanks to its headlight covers, the big Porsche now looks determinedly ahead.

The new light alloy wheels from the Winterlingen-based customiser appear similarly sporty – whether it’s the Mono 10x22-inch sports wheels with silver surface or the two-tone Mono 11x23-inch wheels with powerfully moulded spokes. Not only does the complete wheel set look really racy, it also ensures excellent road holding.

The twin exhaust pipe deflectors made from burnished and chrome-plated stainless steel give the Cayenne Diesel an individual touch while the two 90 millimetre pipes give the vehicle an especially sporty finish.

With that bit of extra agility, the SUV’s refined interior awaits the driver. Even as you open the doors, the matt aluminium door sill panels featuring the machined LUMMA logo showcase the classic character of the revised Cayenne.

The vehicle’s best example of the combination of style and functionality is the boot floor mat, with the LUMMA Design crest logo enhancing its appearance and the boot sill protector preventing unattractive scratches. For those who find all this to be a bit too much in the way of functionality, some of the Cayenne models come with the boot floor mat minus the foldable boot sill protector. Recesses for the lashing eyes are provided too, even for the version with the real leather edging.

Formula 1

There were a lot of speculations about the future of the British Grand Prix at the end of 2009. Donington Park was initially given a 5 year contract to host the Formula 1 British GP, but due to the current economic climate the organizers failed to raise money for the needed redevelopment of the track. This put the future of the race in doubt and many F1 fans in Britain were worried that the even will be dropped from the F1 calendar. At the end, a deal was agreed between FIA and the British Racing Drivers' Club, which secured the future of the British Grand Prix for the next 17 years.

Fernando Alonso gets the jump on Mark Webber at the start

How important exactly is British GP to Formula 1?

The home of the race, Silverstone, is not as modern as some of the new Formula 1 venues like Abu Dhabi. It is certainly not as glamorous as Monaco or as iconic as Monza. What it has is great tradition and very passionate fans. Britain has given to F1 some of the greatest drivers and teams of all time.

British F1 fans always create a fantastic atmosphere and turn up in their thousands despite the fact that the English weather is not always on their site. Not having the British Grand Prix on the F1 calendar is like a football World Cup without Brazil. In this day and age, when F1 is seeing so many changes and car manufacturers like Toyota and BMW are quitting the sport, this race brings much needed tradition and stability.

Avis offers $1.33B for Dollar Thrifty in effort to trump Hertz for rental car company

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — Avis Budget Group Inc. said Wednesday it has offered $1.33 billion in cash and stock for rival rental-car operator Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc.

The bid is an effort to trump Hertz Global Holdings Inc., which in April said it was buying Dollar Thrifty for about $1.17 billion in cash and stock.

"In short, we believe that the higher purchase price we are offering, combined with the terms of our proposed merger agreement, makes our offer a superior one from the perspective of Dollar Thrifty and its shareholders," Ronald Nelson, Avis Budget's chairman and CEO, said in a letter to executives at Dollar Thrifty outlining the bid.

In response, Dollar Thrifty, which is based in Tulsa, Okla., said it will study the offer but noted it had already signed a definitive merger agreement with Hertz.

The latest bid consists of $39.25 in cash and 0.6543 shares of Avis Budget stock. It amounts to $46.50 a share for Dollar Thrifty, a price below the stock's Wednesday close at $48.68. It slipped 68 cents, or 1.4 percent, to $48 in after-hours trading.

The bidding war is part of an ongoing consolidation in the rental-car business that began in 2002, when Avis' parent company bought Budget.

When it announced its deal in April, Hertz, based in Park Ridge, N.J., said the Dollar and Thrifty brands would expand its reach among vacationers who rent cars at airports. Hertz's business is roughly evenly split between business and vacation travelers.

Avis Budget, based in Parsippany, had criticized Dollar Thrifty for not contacting it to discuss a rival bid even though it had expressed an interest in a deal. It also accused Dollar Thrifty of setting an unusually high breakup fee of 5.25 percent in order to deter competing bids. Nelson said his company's bid is more attractive because it does not include those conditions.
